This log cabin was built in the 1990's. It is a manufactured log home built by Black River Falls Log Homes. This particular log cabin had been without a finish or any caulking for over 10 years. There was a lot of work and care that needed to go into this log cabin to get the above results. When this cabin was milled there were very deep milling cuts on the logs. The homeowner wanted these milling marks removed so we completely buffed the logs using a combination of buffing pads and osborne brushes. The buffing pads and osborne brushes worked very well at removing the milling marks and achieved a smooth, uniform and dirt free log surface.
Once the log cabin was completely ozzied (sanded) we vacuumed up all of the dust to ensure that no organic matter would remain in the checks and corners of the log cabin. Afterwards we washed the log cabin to further remove any other foreign materials from the log surface that can affect the results and longevity of the stain and caulking. Once the logs were dry we applied a glycol based borate treatment which helps to preserve and protect the logs from mold, mildew, and most wood-boring insects. *Borate does not treat carpenter bee problems.
The finish that we put on this log cabin was Sashco Capture - Chestnut along with a clearcoat using Sashco Cascade - Satin. We also used Conceal - Santa Fe Trail caulking to seal in between the logs, around the crowns, around the windows and doors, and along the roofline where the logs and roof meet. Caulking or chinking your log home or cabin has many benefits. First, it protects the home from any water, dust, wind, insect, or rodent infiltration. Secondly, it helps the log home or cabin perform how it should by staying warm in the winter and cool in the summer without much help from other heating/cooling sources. Overall this project was a great success and should last for a very long time as long as the maintenance is kept up on in the future.
